Sketches, Sketches and More Sketches
This artwork has plenty of historic reference material behind it, simply due to the fact Vernon sometimes has an idea, quickly draws it up then sets it aside continuing on with whatever he was working on or thinking about or sketching up at the time. He does this to remind himself of the original idea at a later date in hopes of revisiting it and indeed painting it, as was the case with this painting.
Taking a look at the dates of the sketches for this art piece, we'll notice Vernon first had the idea for the painting way back in 1968. Then, he revisited it in 1997. That's over 30 years from idea to conceptualization! We'll notice, he went through a few concept sketches before he finally completed the painting in 1998.
Another in-depth look into the mind and mastery of art that is Vernon Eugene Finney, World War 2 Veteran of the US Navy. Who, at 99 years of age in 2023, is finally doing wjat the artwork is depicting: Breaking out of his shell and taking on the world stage with his his art and its instrinsic message of love, empathy, peace, happiness and positivity using his very own style of philosophy and creativity intermingled.
